Mineral

Ferrous Fumarate

Prevents and treats iron deficiency, essential for healthy red blood cell formation, supports energy levels.

Key Function

Oxygen transport, energy production.

What it's used for

Iron deficiency anemia, preventing iron deficiency.

Key Benefits

Prevents and treats iron deficiency, essential for healthy red blood cell formation, supports energy levels.

Science Behind It

Ferrous fumarate is a common oral iron supplement. Iron is an essential trace mineral crucial for the formation of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that transports oxygen from the lungs to the tissues. It's also vital for myoglobin (oxygen storage in muscles), various enzymes involved in energy production, and DNA synthesis. Iron deficiency leads to anemia, characterized by fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath.

Microcrystalline Cellulose

Acts as a fiber (though typically in small amounts in supplements), provides structure to tablets, generally recognized as safe.

Key Function

Bulking agent, binder, disintegrant.

What it's used for

Pharmaceutical and food additive, mainly as an excipient in tablets and capsules.

Key Benefits

Acts as a fiber (though typically in small amounts in supplements), provides structure to tablets, generally recognized as safe.

Science Behind It

Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) is a purified, partially depolymerized cellulose. It's an inert, insoluble dietary fiber that is not digested or absorbed by the body. In supplement formulations, its primary role is as a binder to hold ingredients together, a filler or bulking agent to increase tablet size, and a disintegrant to help tablets break down in the digestive tract.

Magnesium Stearate

Improves manufacturing efficiency, ensures consistent tablet/capsule fill, generally recognized as safe.

Key Function

Lubricant, anti-adherent.

What it's used for

Pharmaceutical and supplement manufacturing aid to prevent ingredients from sticking

Key Benefits

Improves manufacturing efficiency, ensures consistent tablet/capsule fill, generally recognized as safe.

Science Behind It

Magnesium stearate is a salt formed from magnesium and stearic acid, a saturated fatty acid.

Di Calcium Phosphate

Supports bone and teeth health, provides essential calcium and phosphorus.

Key Function

Bone structure, mineral source, bulking agent.

What it's used for

Calcium and phosphorus supplementation, used as a dietary supplement and excipient in tablets.

Key Benefits

Supports bone and teeth health, provides essential calcium and phosphorus.

Science Behind It

Di Calcium Phosphate is a compound containing both calcium and phosphorus, two essential minerals for human health. Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body, primarily stored in bones and teeth, providing structural integrity. Phosphorus is the second most abundant, also critical for bone and teeth formation, energy metabolism (ATP), and cell membrane structure. In supplements, it acts both as a mineral source and a pharmaceutical excipient (filler/binder).

FAQ

What does iron do?

Iron is essential for forming haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen around the body. EFSA-recognised contributions include normal energy-yielding metabolism, the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, normal red blood cell and haemoglobin formation, normal oxygen transport, normal cognitive function, normal immune function, and a role in cell division.

Who should take an iron supplement?

Women of menstruating age, vegetarians and vegans, endurance athletes, and people diagnosed with low iron levels are the most common groups who benefit. If you suspect you have iron deficiency, ask your GP for a ferritin blood test before supplementing — taking iron when you don't need it can be harmful.

What's the difference between ferrous fumarate, ferrous sulfate, and ferrous bisglycinate?

All three are forms of supplemental iron. Ferrous sulfate is the most common but tends to cause more digestive side effects. Ferrous fumarate (this product) is well-absorbed and gentler on the stomach. Ferrous bisglycinate is the gentlest form but typically more expensive. NHS guidance recommends ferrous fumarate or ferrous sulfate as first-line treatment.

When is the best time to take iron?

On an empty stomach for best absorption — first thing in the morning or before bed. If iron causes stomach upset, take with food. Pair with a source of Vitamin C to improve absorption, and avoid tea, coffee, dairy, calcium and antacids around the same time.

Why should I take iron with Vitamin C?

Vitamin C significantly increases the body's ability to absorb non-haem iron (the form found in plants and supplements). Taking iron with a glass of orange juice, kiwi, or a Vitamin C supplement can meaningfully improve how much iron actually reaches your bloodstream.

How long until I feel the effects of iron?

Most people notice changes in energy and reduced tiredness within four to eight weeks of consistent daily use. Full restoration of iron stores can take three months or more, particularly if levels were significantly low to begin with.

Why does iron sometimes cause stomach upset?

Iron supplements are well-known for causing constipation, nausea, or dark stools in some people. Taking iron with food, drinking plenty of water, and choosing a gentler form like ferrous fumarate help reduce these effects.

Can I take iron every day?

Yes — at the recommended daily dose, ferrous fumarate 14mg is suitable for daily long-term use in those who need it. If you're unsure whether you need iron supplementation, get a ferritin blood test through your GP first.

Is thecary's iron vegan?

Yes. Our Iron 14mg is fully vegan, GMO-free, and made in the UK. Ferrous fumarate is a synthetic mineral salt, not animal-derived.

Can I take iron with other thecary supplements?

Iron pairs particularly well with our Vitamin B Complex (especially B12 — both are involved in red blood cell formation) and Marine Collagen + Vitamin C (Vitamin C improves iron absorption). Avoid taking iron at the same time as Magnesium Complex or Calcium-based supplements, as they compete for absorption — space them at least four hours apart.
